Making Friends Group

Helping children with the ups and downs of friendships by learning core friendship skills!

  • Cooperation: How to share, how to take turns, how to work together towards a common goal
  • Communication: Using words to explain what you want and listening to others respectfully. Paying attention to body language, eg. making eye contact, smiling, being able to read others’ non-verbal reactions.
  • Understanding and managing feelings: Being able to express feelings in ways that help others understand you. Recognizing and responding to others’ feelings
  • Accepting and including others: Recognizing others’ needs for respect and friendship.
  • Solving friendship problems: Children develop friendship skills through playing with other children. Because they are learning, they are sure to have times when things do not go as they would like and sometimes children blame themselves for what has happened.

How the group works:  weekly sessions for 6 weeks in a row.

Confidentiality: in these sessions, confidentiality is necessary and expected of all participants. You could ask your child or teen about his or her activities within this group, but please do not ask about other children or teens. For efficiency of group interaction, places are limited to maximum 8 members per group. Regular, punctual attendance is expected (with the exception of unavoidable emergencies, illness, etc.), as it maximizes the therapeutic usefulness of the group process.
